AI visibility audit vs. agent readiness audit
Getting mentioned or cited by an answer engine is not the same as helping an agent finish a signup, booking, purchase, or product task. Measure both—but never combine their denominators.
AI visibility audit
Measures whether a fixed set of prompts produces a brand mention or source citation in named answer engines. A reproducible audit pins the provider, model or product, account state, locale, date, prompt set, and what counts as a citation.
Best evidence: query-level answer captures reconciled with first-party referrals and downstream conversion.
Agent readiness audit
Measures whether a selected browser, computer-use agent, or API client can complete a defined user job from a stated starting point, recover from errors, stop before consequence, and return evidence of what happened.
Best evidence: task traces, observable state, the first failure, completion receipts, and the same fixture rerun after a fix.
The evidence is different
| Dimension | AI visibility | Agent readiness |
|---|---|---|
| Primary question | Do target answer engines mention or cite us for a defined query set? | Can a selected agent complete a defined customer task on our site safely? |
| Unit of analysis | Query × provider × location/account × time | Task × starting URL × environment × safe stopping point |
| Core evidence | Answer text, cited domains/URLs, share of voice, first-party referral and conversion | Trace, DOM/accessibility state, API contract, first failure, completion evidence, receipt |
| Typical success metric | Eligible-query citation coverage and qualified visits | Eligible-task completion rate with no unintended consequence |
| Common false positive | A brand mention with no link, visit, or buyer action | A high static score when the actual signup or purchase task still fails |
| What it cannot guarantee | Ranking, traffic, revenue, or consistent answers across providers | Search discovery, answer-engine citation, revenue, security, or accessibility conformance |
A defensible measurement plan
1. Pin the discovery set
Choose queries by customer job, record search volume or first-party query evidence separately, and preserve provider, date, locale, and account state.
2. Define citation truth
Separate a text mention, linked citation, cited URL, referral session, activated user, and customer. Do not call one event the whole funnel.
3. Write the task contract
Name the starting URL, target outcome, allowed actions, prohibited consequence, expected receipt, and environment for each readiness test.
4. Preserve the first failure
Record the earliest ambiguity, blocked control, validation error, fetch failure, or authorization boundary—not only the final score.
5. Reconcile with first party
Compare provider captures with Search Console, analytics, product events, and buyer truth using each source’s own data-through date.
6. Rerun the same fixture
Verify the same query set and task after changes. A different prompt, model, route, or target is new evidence, not a before/after result.
Current Google boundary
AI visibility in Google remains rooted in Search
Google says its generative Search features use core Search ranking and quality systems and that the usual SEO foundations remain relevant. It also says special AI text files such as llms.txt are not used by Google Search and do not help or harm rankings. That makes crawlability, index eligibility, useful original content, internal links, and first-party Search Console evidence more defensible than a proprietary “Google AI readiness” badge.

What AgentReady measures today
AgentReady audits owned website and connected-repository evidence: discovery surfaces, content structure, browser semantics, forms, task safety, API hints, and implementation-ready fixes. It does not currently monitor citations across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, or other answer engines. Use a citation audit for that job, and use AgentReady to test whether referred agents can complete the owned journey.
Frequently asked questions
Is an AI visibility score the same as an agent readiness score?
No. Visibility measures whether a brand or page appears in selected answer experiences. Readiness measures whether an agent can understand and complete a defined task on the owned experience.
Does AgentReady track ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, or Google citations?
Not currently. AgentReady evaluates owned website and repository evidence plus defined agent journeys; it should not be interpreted as cross-engine citation monitoring.
Which audit should we run first?
If nobody can discover the product, establish search and citation baselines. If referrals already arrive but do not convert, test the landing-to-task journey first. Most teams ultimately need both with separate denominators.
